World’s Dumbest Passwords Revealed: 200 Reasons To Use A Password Manager

Popular passwords can be insecure and dumb, but these are the 200 dumbest in 2020.

Although I've often made a case for getting rid of passwords altogether, the truth is that's not going to happen any time soon. You may use your face or fingerprint more than you enter a password these days, but the passwords are still there beneath the biometrics.


And that, dear reader, is a problem. Not just any old problem either, but a big dumb one more often than not. Look no further than an analysis of more than 275 million passwords that NordPass published this last week for proof of that.

This list revealed what are, frankly, the world's 200 dumbest passwords. It also provides 200 compelling reasons why you really should be using a password manager, but I'll get onto that in a minute. First, let's dig into the data a little.


275 million breached passwords put under the microscope


Of the 275,699,516 passwords that were analyzed, more than half were not unique. The 122,894,788 that were might sound like a significant number, but it represents just 44% of the total. As someone who has spent the past three decades working in and around cybersecurity, that 56% of passwords are pretty obviously not being generated randomly is disappointing, to say the least. Disappointing in 2020, but not surprising.
