US election 2020 LIVE updates: RNC continues as Melania Trump, Mike Pompeo and Eric Trump speak


A live stream of day two of the RNC:



The presidential pardon of convicted bank robber John Ponder generated a lot of reaction. The event was norm-busting because, although a president has the right to such a decision, showcasing it during the Republican National Convention is new.


Some were moved by the event, despite concerns for how it could be spun.




However, others were more sceptical of the way minorities' stories can be co-opted by the Trump campaign.




Here's a quick take of Day Two of the RNC by North American correspondent Matthew Knott:


"Night two of the convention was lower energy than yesterday: certainly no-one matched Kimberly Guilfoyle's booming speech from the night before. The coronavirus pandemic was strikingly absent for almost the entire night. White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow mentioned it in the past tense as if the crisis was over when the virus is still killing over 1000 Americans a day.


"Meanwhile there was a lot of the Trump family: first daughter Tiffany, then son Eric and wife Melania. Norms were shattered repeatedly as the White House became used as a political backdrop. Melania Trump delivered her 25-minute speech from the White House Rose Garden, a venue usually reserved for official events. Notably, she expressed sympathy for those who have suffered COVID-19, the first speaker so far to do so.


"President Trump granted a pardon to a former bank robber and then hosted a naturalisation ceremony in the White House. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo beamed in from Jerusalem - an extremely unusual moment given he is the nation's chief diplomat."
