UK Power Grid Network Middleman Struck by Digital Attack
A middleman organization in the United Kingdom’s power grid network suffered a digital attack that affected its internal IT systems.Electricity trading arrangements provider Elexon publicly disclosed the attack in a bulletin posted to its website on May 14:We are advising you that today that ELEXON’s internal IT systems have been impacted by a cyber attack. BSC Central Systems and EMR are currently unaffected and working as normal. The attack is to our internal IT systems and ELEXON’s laptops only. We are currently working hard to resolve this. However please be aware that at the moment we are unable to send or receive any emails.A child organization of the National Grid Electricity Transmission PLC, Elexon didn’t instruct users to take any action as a response to the security incident. Instead, it told them that it would be sending out additional updates as it learned more about the attack.

Its first update arrived within a matter of hours. That follow-up bulletin revealed that Elexon had identified the root cause of the digital attack and that it was working to restore its internal IT systems to normal functionality. It also clarified that its BSC Central Systems, those assets’ data and EMR were unaffected by the security incident.National Grid ESO, the electricity system operator for Great Britain, announced that the attack had not disrupted electricity supply.
