Scam alert, fraudsters offering COVID-19 tests to gain personal information from Osceola residents | #coronavirus | #scams | #covid19

As we all know, the coronavirus pandemic is not yet in our “rear view” mirror. As we work together as a community and as a nation to be safe, there are unfortunately some individuals that are trying to take advantage of the situation. Scammers are offering COVID-19 tests to Medicare beneficiaries in exchange for personal details, including their Medicare information. However, the services are fraudulent, illegitimate, and are not to be engaged with in any way.

Fraudsters are targeting beneficiaries in a number of ways including telemarketing calls, social media posts, text messages, and even door to door visits.

The personal information collected can be used to fraudulently bill federal health care programs and commit medical identity theft. If Medicare of medicaid denies the claim for a fraudulent test, the actual beneficiary could be responsible for the costs incurred, and cause the beneficiary to have to work to have the costs removed and to repair their personal identity security.

If approached by a potential scammer – be cautious, and do not provide any personal information. Call the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office at 407.348.2222.
