Residents told to ‘leave for a safe place’ as bushfire burns close to homes south of Geraldton

Residents in Geraldton’s south have been told to evacuate as an out-of-control and unpredictable bushfire burns close to homes and schools in the suburb of Wandina.


An emergency warning is in place for people in the area bounded by Brellimos Drive, Eakins Crescent, and McDermott Avenue, as they are in danger and need to act immediately to survive.

Residents in Ackland Road, Verita Road, Columbus Boulevard, and Brand Highway should make final preparations as the fire approaches the area and weather conditions change.


Electoral volunteers at Wandina Primary School have reportedly left their stations to evacuate their properties nearby amid strong winds.



The fire, which started near the intersection of Verita Road and Columbus Boulevard just before 11.30 am on Saturday, is moving slowly in a south-westerly direction and burning on the eastern and western side of Verita Road.


The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has warned the blaze is unpredictable and burning embers are likely to be blown around homes.


A number of roads, including Verita Road and Columbus Road, have been closed and motorists have been urged to avoid the area and to drive carefully due to smoke.


Firefighters are on the scene battling the flames and strengthening containment lines.
