Ransomware Attack on Premier Family Medical Reportedly Impacts Records of 320K Patients

Utah-based health care practice Premier Family Medical was struck by ransomware inJuly. The cyber-attack reportedly affected the records of roughly 320,000 patients.

The medical provider, which operates 10 locations across Utah County, originally announced the incident publicly on 30 August, noting that the malware had restricted employees’ access to their systems and data.

However, at least two medical news sources have reported additional details, noting that the company had revealed the approximate number of affected patients in a disclosure to the federal government.

"We love being in the business of caring for patients and understand that includes protecting their health information," said Robert Edwards, Premier’s chief administrator, in an online notification letter posted last month. "Even though our investigation has found no reason to believe patient information was accessed or taken, we are very concerned that this event even occurred and have taken steps to further enhance the security of our systems."
