With the potential threats of a cyberattack, the Port of Olympia plans to improve its cyber security.

In a presentation during the regular commission meeting, on Tue., Sept. 28, Port of Olympia’s Senior Administrative Services Manager Matt Peach shared that the Port had requested funding from the federal government to improve its cyber-security. Peach noted that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security had recently approved a $228,731 grant to fund its Cyber Awareness and Hardening project.

Peach shared that improving the Port’s cybersecurity is necessary since a cyber-attack could cause serious damage to port operations. He explained that the project would improve the Port’s Information Technology Infrastructure and improvements include having a separate Port Wi-Fi network.

Overall, the Port staff explained that the project would cost a total of $304,975, with $228,731 coming from the federal grant while the remaining $76,243 would come from the Port’s budget.

The Port Commissioners have 60 days to accept the grant and comply with the necessary requirements. The project is scheduled for adoption in November 2022.
