Shortly following AMD's CES 2021 event, NVIDIA had its where the company announced the upcoming RTX 3060, upcoming laptops with the RTX 30 series, and some new technologies, such as 3rd Generation Max-Q. As the RTX 3060 may be the more interesting announcement for many of you, I will start with this $329 part expected to launch in late February. For the announcement, the success of the popular GTX 1060 was covered first, setting this new part up as its successor. NVIDIA is claiming the RTX 3060 will offer double the raster performance of the GTX 1060, making it powerful enough for titles like Cyberpunk 2077. It will have 13 shader TFLOPs, 25 RT TFLOPs, and 101 tensor TFLOPs, which will be to drive DLSS. The GPU will also have a 192-bit memory interface to connect to 12 GB of GDDR6.

In addition to support for the various RTX technologies, the RTX 3060 will be the first graphics card from NVIDIA to support resizable BAR, a feature of the PCIe specification that has gained significant attention since AMD announced Smart Access Memory that takes advantage of the same technology. Basically the CPU is able to directly access a portion of your GPU's VRAM, but normally this is limited to 256 MB at a time. The resizable BAR feature introduced with the PCIe specification makes it possible for the CPU to access larger portions of the VRAM, which can positively impact performance. How large an improvement will depend on the title and potentially also the optimizations we see in the future, as the use of this technology is still fairly new.
