University of California and Stanford University systems breached

In February Accellion was the victim of a major security incident, and since then the number of Universities affected by the breach are growing by the day. The latest victims of the breach are the University of California and Stanford University.

The university systems have been breached due to the Accellion incident, with an unknown number of files being affected by the hack. Stanford has said that their medical school was targeted, which resulted in the personal data of both students and staff being compromised. The school will be offering those affected by the breach identity theft protection services.

The University of California has said that the attackers have posted screenshots online in an attempt to scare individuals into paying a ransom. University students and staff received a message saying, “Your personal data has been stolen and will be published.” The University of California has said, “at this time, we believe this attack affected only the Accellion system and did not compromise other UC systems or networks.” The university is also offering those affected free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.
