Two men arrested after ‘targeted’ shooting near CBD strip club

Police have arrested two men after a 19-year-old man was shot early on Sunday in what is being treated as a targeted attack.

The 19-year-old Niddrie man was taken to hospital in a stable condition with non-life threatening injuries, while two Melbourne men, both aged 24, were arrested on Sunday and were being interviewed by police.

Victoria Police Detective Inspector Chris Murray said an altercation broke out between the men early on Sunday.

Police are still treating the shooting as a targeted attack but are still working to determine the exact circumstances around what happened.

Early reports suggested the men had an altercation inside the Men’s Gallery on Lonsdale Street but the venue’s owner Peter Iwaniuk told The Age no one had been ejected at the time and none of his staff or patrons were aware of the shooting as it happened away from his club.

“My understanding is this incident happened across the road in Lonsdale Street, outside a demolition site, and the men were known to each other,” Iwaniuk said

Emergency services were called to Lonsdale Street, near the corner of King Street, at around 4am after reports a man had been injured.

“There was an altercation of some sort, which has turned into a shooting,” Murray said on Sunday morning.

“We have a victim who was taken to hospital. He is in a stable condition [and] he is not being overly co-operative, I must say. He’s not providing much detail, which is no surprise to us in these incidents.”
