Twitter updates policy following Biden article block

Twitter has recently updated their ‘Hacked Materials’ policy which resulted in users being blocked after sharing a link to a New York Post article regarding Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.

The policy was blocking Twitter users from sharing the news article as the content of the article has been acquired following a hack. Twitter’s Legal, Policy and Trust & Safety Lead, Vijaya Gadde, said that the posts will be flagged as containing materials acquired through a hack, rather than simply blocked. Material shared directly by hackers, however, will still be removed.

The New York Post article contained screenshots of emails supposedly sent and received by Hunter Biden, Joe Biden’s son. It also used personal photos of Hunter Biden, which were allegedly removed from a laptop which was undergoing repairs. Twitter’s CEO, Jack Dorsey, described the lack of clarity behind removing the posts as “not great”, especially following accusations from Republican’s that Twitter was censoring the Right.
