The deal is not yet done, but it looks almost certain that Germany international Timo Werner will move from RB Leipzig to Chelsea this summer.


The move would be a real statement of intent from Chelsea, as the west London club emerge from their transfer ban with two top-class signings in Werner and Hakim Ziyech before the summer transfer window has even officially opened.

This summer’s transfer window will be one of the strangest in recent years, with the impact of the coronavirus distorting it in several ways. There will be a clear-cut difference between the game’s elite and the rest of the clubs. Teams that have the financial firepower to effectively ignore the impact of the coronavirus will push on as normal, spending huge amounts on big names. Teams that have to take the virus into account will be more cautious, doing loan or swap deals and trying to reduce unnecessary expenditure, or having to sell before they buy.
