Russian hackers behind Norway’s August Parliament attack

Yesterday Ine Eriksen Søreide, Norway’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, revealed that Russia was behind the cyber-attack on the Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget) in August 2020. The attacks in August resulted in hackers gaining access to email accounts of Stortinget representatives and employees, with data being stolen from these accounts. Although it is disclosed what data was stolen, a statement from the Center Party confirmed that those employees involved in the attack were impacted by it. Jarle Roheim Håkonsen, the communications manager of the Labor Party also confirmed that staff and politicians from the Labor Party were also affected by the attack.

In a statement yesterday Ine Eriksen Søreide said, “on 24 August, the Storting announced a data breach in their e-mail systems”. He continued to say that “based on the information base the government possesses, it is our assessment that Russia is behind this activity.”
