NIST Researchers Installed a New Quantum Voltage Standard in Spain

NIST delivered the first NIST Standard Reference Instrument (SRI) to Spain’s oldest calibration laboratory, the National Institute of Aerospace Technology (INTA). The NIST SRI 6000 is the Programmable Josephson Voltage Standard (PJVS) in its latest fully automated and cryogen-free implementation. This is the first PJVS SRI system to utilize a new, more compact cryostat design and it is also the first time that NIST’s Superconductive Electronics Group performed simultaneously the system installation and the necessary intercomparison with the NIST traveling PJVS to verify the system performance on-site at INTA.

INTA is a Public Research Organization that is responsible for the aerospace, aeronautics, hydrodynamics, and defense and security technologies research for Spain. Having a quantum-based voltage standard allows them to reduce their measurement uncertainties. INTA was the first calibration laboratory accredited in Spain in the early 1970s, predating the creation of the Spanish National Metrology Institute in 1985. INTA was one of the pioneers in the dissemination of primary Josephson voltage standard measurements throughout Europe. The new PJVS SRI system will replace their conventional Josephson voltage standard, that was operated continuously since the mid-1990s. The newly installed INTA PJVS is the first NIST cryocooled SRI system deployed in Europe, and it will allow INTA to eliminate their regular need to purchase costly liquid helium to realize the SI volt.
