Going back a decade in the past, the breaches of Heartland, an independent card processor, and US Military shook the world. In year 2011 we saw the famous Sony PSN breach affecting roughly 77 million customers followed by Sony Entertainment breach during the same year. In the year 2013, Target breach came to the light in which the hackers gained access to 40 million credit and debit card accounts of the retailers’ customers.

The size and impact of the breaches kept growing bigger and more lethal with passage of time. The same year Yahoo breach took place, exposing as many as 3 billion records. The sheer number of accounts affected makes this, by far, the largest breach to date. Year 2015 saw Anthem, one of the largest US health insurer, being breached. Reports said the breach exposed a database containing almost 80 million records of current and former customers, as well as employees and the information included names, Social Security numbers, birthdays, addresses, email and employment information, including income data.

In 2017 Equifax, one of America’s three major credit reporting agencies, was brought down to its knees. Not only were 143 million American consumers’ personal information got exposed in the breach but also the hackers stole the credit card numbers for about 209,000 people and dispute documents with personal identifying information for about 182,000 people.
