Boise-based Micron Technology is the target of a reported investigation by the Chinese government.


The Wall Street Journal reported the Cyberspace Administration of China said it would launch the review of Micron products sold in the country due to what it said was the need to protect its supply chain.


Micron responded early Friday afternoon.


“We are aware the Cyberspace Administration of China announced plans to conduct a cybersecurity review of Micron’s products sold in China,” the company wrote in the statement. “We are in communication with the CAC and are cooperating fully. Micron is committed to conducting all business with uncompromising integrity, and we stand by the security of our products and our commitments to customers.”


Geo-political tensions between the United States and China have increasingly spilled over into the private sector. The US banned most imports from Huawei – a Chinese maker of phones and other devices – in the late 2010s over security concerns. The US under Former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden has threatened to ban social media platform TikTok. A bill to do so in the Senate is currently stalled. China bars a wide swath of US companies from operating in the communist country, including Facebook, Google, Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr, Pinterest, Slack, Twitch, Discord, Dropbox, Quora, Wikipedia and scores of others.

The Chinese Micron probe comes as the chipmaker is working to increase production of semiconductor chips in the US – including a $15 billion facility planned adjacent to its Boise headquarters and an even larger plant planned for upstate New York.
