Irish children increase use of technology during lockdown - research

Irish children significantly increased their use of technology during the Covid-19 lockdown, spending more time online, according to new research from the National Anti-Bullying Research & Resource Centre at Dublin City University (DCU), in partnership with the EC's Joint Research Centre.

The research shows that 71 percent of Irish children who use smartphones used them more often during lockdown than before. The same applies for 72 percent of children who use social media; 66 percent of those using games consoles; and 65 percent of children using private/instant messaging. The research also shows a significant increase in social media use in the 10-13 age group, with 75 percent of children who use social media in this group using it more often.

Despite this increased use of technology, only 28 percent of children claimed to have experienced cyber bullying during lockdown, with no sharp rise in victimisation. Of those who have been cyber bullied, 39 percent said it happened more frequently than before lockdown, 37 percent said it happened as frequently before, and 23 percent said it happened less frequently.
