Iranian Hackers Launch a New US-Targeted Campaign as Tensions Mount

In the midst of rising US-Iran tensions, security researchers with Crowdstrike and Dragos have uncovered a new Iranian cyber campaign targeting organizations in the United States. The state-backed Iranian hacking group APT33 (aka Magnallium, or Refined Kitten) is behind the phishing campaign that has targeted around half a dozen organizations including the Department of Energy and US national labs.

John Hultquist of FireEye confirms that there has been an increase in Iranian cyber campaigns, a trend that coincides with mounting US-Iran tensions. However, he is “not sure if it’s intelligence collection, gathering information on the conflict, or if it’s the most dire concern we’ve always had, which is preparation for an attack.”
