Chinese-affiliated hacking groups’ latest target is the United States’ important infrastructural assets including major ports and Hawaii Water Utility. The cyber attackers, to exploit systemic vulnerabilities, have been targeting junior-level employees with minimal cyber shields. In 2022, cyber attackers sitting in different parts of the world with affiliations to China’s military attacked 20 major suppliers in the US. Hawaii’s major water utility was one of their prominent targets. The cyber attackers also unleashed their fury over the West Coast port and an oil gas pipeline with the aim of causing “societal chaos,” reported the Washington Post.




The WP’s report is based on the experts’ take on the matter who have analyzed the recent cyberattack or threats against the United States. The cyber attackers reportedly bypassed cyber security systems by intercepting passwords and log-ins of junior employees working in different departments.




More than two dozen high-value targets have been attacked in the last year alone, as per the reports. By bypassing hi-tech firewalls and targeting ordinary employees, Brandon Wales, DHS’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) told The Daily Mail UK, “It is very clear that Chinese attempts to compromise critical infrastructure are in part to pre-position themselves to be able to disrupt or destroy that critical infrastructure in the event of a conflict.”
