Regardless of their subscription plan, every Bitwarden user can now manage passkeys using the Bitwarden web extension. When visiting a passkey-enabled website and initiating the creation process, Bitwarden detects the request and prompts the user to incorporate the passkey into a vault item or create a new one. Once saved, the passkey stands ready for secure and passwordless logins.
Passkeys represent a highly secure form of cryptographic authentication, reducing the reliance on traditional passwords. This method employs a pair of keys: a public key stored on passkey-enabled websites and a private key on the user’s device. Even if a website’s public key were to be compromised, the user’s account remains secure, as the private key is stored securely on their device. This process is built on the WebAuthn protocols developed by the FIDO Alliance, an esteemed industry association of technology leaders, ensuring a robust and tested system for secure account access.
