Netflix to trial restrictions on password sharing

Netflix has announced that it will be trialling new restrictions for password sharing on its streaming platform. Streaming services, such as including HBO Go, Amazon Prime, Netflix and Disney+, all allow users to create multiple profiles which can be used across a number of devices. However, it is specified in their terms and conditions that these profiled must only be used by people in the same household.

Some Netflix users have reported seeing a screen that says, “if you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.” Users must then verify that they are allowed to access the account and are within the same household by entering a code, sent by text or email. A Netflix spokesperson has confirmed that “this test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorised to do so.”

Netflix is yet to announce whether this will be a global or platform-wide policy, or how many people can share one account.
