Introducing 2 Forensic Focus Podcast Co-Hosts: Simon Biles and Alex Desmond

Christa: Welcome to the Forensic Focus podcast. I’m your host, Christa Miller. And this week we’re switching it up a little bit. We’re introducing some new co-hosts: Simon Biles and Alex Desmond. Simon’s an IT and digital forensics expert witness based in Oxford, United Kingdom. And Alex is a lead incident responder and insider threat specialist in Adelaide, Australia. They’ll be working with me to produce podcasts with maybe a little more practitioner-oriented technical content. Welcome to you both.


Simon: Hi.


Alex: Thanks, Christa.



Christa: So I want to start, let’s expand a bit on your introductions. If you could tell us how you both got into digital forensics, what drew you to where you are now, and anything else you’d like to share?


Simon: Let’s go in alphabetical order. Alex, you go first.


Alex: Oh, under the bus straight away. Okay.


Simon: This is the way it’s going to be from now on. Get used to it.


Alex: Ah, okay. I was going to say beauty and age first, but I’m happy to go.


So, I started off doing an engineering degree. I’ve got a background in mechatronics and mathematics from the University of Sydney. From there, I went into the Royal Australian Air Force where I predominantly worked within the cyber squadron.


And I was there for about four years and that’s where I kind of fell into I guess the digital forensics and IR side of things. So, militaries spend a lot of time kind of training the digital forensics side, but they still train the IR side, as well.
