‘Clearly a targeted attack’: One man shot dead, another injured in Hurstville shooting

“Two men were entering a motor vehicle when they were ambushed by a number of males,” said Detective Superintendent Tony Cooke.

“This is clearly a targeted attack in which there’s been some degree of planning,” he said.

“They’re known to police and we’re continuing inquiries into what might have been the motivation for the attack.”

The incident took place after a boxing match at Hurstville Civic Centre, leaving neighbouring streets overcrowded at the time of the shooting.

“Clearly any environment where people are shooting at someone is dangerous … and we’re very, very concerned, obviously, that this type of behaviour occurred,” Superintendent Cooke said.

Paramedics treated the men at the scene before taking them to hospital but the older man died. The 23-year-old is in a stable condition.

The gunman is on the run, NSW Police said. It is not yet known how many people were involved in the shooting.

Footage capturing the aftermath of the shooting shows a uniformed police officer and two other men hunched over the open doors of a white Mercedes. One of the men takes off his T-shirt and hands it to the police officer leaning over the back seat where the wounded man lies.

A man can be heard yelling “get him out of the car ... please, can we get him out of the car”, in a video supplied to the St George Shire Standard.

Another man yells “get back, this is a crime scene”.

Another man lies on the footpath nearby a police officer, and men in shorts and T-shirts kneel beside him.
