Google addressed two critical vulnerabilities in the Android System component as part of the newly released September 2020 set of security patches.
More than 50 flaws are described in the Android Security Bulletin for September 2020: twenty-two as part of the 2020-09-01 security patch level and twenty-nine with the 2020-09-05 security patch level.
Of the 22 issues fixed with the 2020-09-01 security patch level, 10 impact Framework (four elevation of privilege and six information disclosure), 7 were addressed in Media framework (six information disclosure and one elevation of privilege), and 5 affect the System component (one remote code execution, two information disclosure, and two elevation of privilege).
The most important of these bugs affects the Media framework component and is tracked as CVE-2020-0245. According to Google, the flaw leads to information disclosure in Android 10 (rated high severity), or to remote code execution in Android 8.0, 8.1, and 9 (considered critical).
“The most severe of these issues is a critical security vulnerability in the Media Framework component that could enable a remote attacker using a specially crafted file to execute arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process,” the Internet giant explains.
The aforementioned critical flaws in System, which are tracked as CVE-2020-0380 and CVE-2020-0396, may lead to remote code execution and information disclosure, respectively. Both of them affect Android 8.0, 8.1, 9, and 10.
Components affected by the 29 flaws patched with the 2020-09-05 security patch level include Kernel (three high-risk bugs – two elevation of privilege, one information disclosure), MediaTek components (four high-severity issues), Qualcomm components (five high-risk vulnerabilities), and Qualcomm closed-source components (five critical flaws and twelve high-risk bugs).
