Mystery Russian Telegram Hacks Intercept Secret Codes To Spy On Messages

In recent weeks, more than a dozen Russian entrepreneurs have seen their Telegram accounts hacked, in attacks that may have ramifications for anyone using the messaging app, according to firm Group-IB. What’s particularly disturbing is that the victims' messages were snooped on because codes used to authenticate users were intercepted by the attackers. But hackers managed to get access to those secret codes and swept up Telegram chats of a handful of Russian users, according to Group-IB researchers who investigated victims’ phones. Dmitry Rodin, who runs a coding school in Russia and was one of the unfortunate targets, told Forbes he was sent a warning from Telegram on December 1, saying someone was trying to log into his account. For the average Telegram user, or anyone with a messaging app that sends SMS codes for logging in, what’s most worrying is that attackers were able to access those authentication codes in the first place. Now it may be that hackers are using the same techniques to break into Telegram accounts and others that use text messages to send two-factor codes.
