The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a non-regulatory agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, has been at the forefront of guiding cryptographic security programs and standards for more than 20 years. NIST morphed from its original name — the National Bureau of Standards that began at the turn of the 20th century — into its current iteration as the mobile revolution began to take off in the mid ‘90s.
