In February, CNBC reported that Microsoft is planning to bring Windows 10’s default anti-virus system to Android users. The Microsoft Defender Android app is now available on the Google Play Store as a software preview.
In the Android app’s description, Microsoft says that the app is not free right off the bat. And it is only available to enterprise users who have a Microsoft 365 E5 license.
Microsoft Defender ATP mainly targets enterprise users owning Android devices; therefore, it has a few enterprise-focused protection features. Security admins, for instance, can create custom indicators for web protection. The app can also block users who don’t follow the organization’s threat protection policies.
Apart from that, it can warn about suspicious app installations and block malicious web pages opened through WhatsApp, web browser, email, etc.
The selective availability puts the Android app at a disadvantage against the best anti-virus apps on the platform. However, we can’t complain since this is merely a software preview, and Microsoft may have plans for non-enterprise users.
The previous CNBC report also suggested that Microsoft Defender would arrive on Linux and iOS. Of course, it would be interesting to see its capability on Linux, but Microsoft Defender on iOS doesn’t seem like a good idea.
