Indigestion? Try Some Ginger

What: SRM 3398 is a ground powder prepared from ginger rhizomes. A unit of SRM 3398 consists of 5 packets of material, each containing approximately 1.6 g of ground ginger rhizome.

Why:  Ginger-based dietary supplements are used to alleviate symptoms of nausea due to pregnancy, motion, surgery, and chemotherapy and as an anti-inflammatory to reduce joint and muscle pain.  SRM 3398 can be used to assist in the verification of manufacturer’s label claims concerning ginger in dietary supplements, foods, and spices. The material can be used for quality control during manufacturing processes for determining the presence of contaminates such as arsenic, lead, and mercury, as well as gingerols and shogaols that give ginger its unique smell and taste.

Who: SRM 3398 will be used by laboratories that wish to demonstrate method validity, accuracy, or when qualifying their own in-house control materials.

How:  Laboratories will analyze SRM 3398 when evaluating analytical methods for the determination of the unique, potentially therapeutic gingerols and shogaols in supplements, and the contaminants arsenic and related compounds, lead, and mercury in ginger rhizomes or similar materials.
