Guam National Guard Participates in Cyber Shield 2022, the DoD's Largest Unclassified Cyber Defense Exercise - DVIDS

About a dozen Guam National Guard cyber and computer security specialists are honing their skills, June 5-17, as part of Cyber Shield 2022, the Department of Defense’s largest unclassified cyber defense exercise.There are approximately 800 National Guard cyber specialists as well as law enforcement, legal, government and corporate partners from across the country participating in Cyber Shield, but the U.S. territory of Guam traveled the farthest to participate, beating Alaska by about 3,600 miles.This year the exercise is being conducted at the Army National Guard’s Professional Education Center on Camp Joseph T. Robinson in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Service members and civilian experts from 20 states and Guam have gathered for the exercise.“Our Guam Cyber team comprises Army, Air, and Space National Guardsmen assigned to defensive, offensive, and assessment roles. With the NGB leadership, we can exercise and prepare our team in a multidomain operational environment to support future INDOPACOM missions,” said Guam Army National Guard Maj. Bumjin Park, the Chief Information Officer for the Guam National Guard“We develop talent and exercise their newly acquired skills individually and collectively as a team,” he added. “As we, as Guam National Guard, organize, train, and equip the force; the cyber skill set is a vital asset to protect the nation and island of Guam.”Guam is vital to the U.S. strategy in the Indo-Pacific area. Defending in the cyber domain is a critical enabler to that strategy.“The primary focus of Guam's Joint Cyber Team is to detect, defend, respond to and prevent cyber-attacks that can affect the military systems and networks that, in turn, may affect the military operations,” Park said. “Therefore, the military's essential role concerning cyber-security is to offer protection to the communications and information systems.”This was the first time Guam brought the whole joint cyber team t ..
