Australia news LIVE: Home affairs minister flags migration overhaul; COP27 climate summit begins


In business news, Medibank Private says it will not pay a ransom to the hackers who accessed personal information on all 4 million of its customers and an unknown number of former members.


Here’s what Medibank chief executive David Koczkar told us in a statement:



Based on the extensive advice we have received from cybercrime experts, we believe there is only a limited chance paying a ransom would ensure the return of our customers’ data and prevent it from being published.


In fact, paying could have the opposite effect and encourage the criminal to directly extort our customers, and there is a strong chance that paying puts more people in harm’s way by making Australia a bigger target.


It is for these reasons we have decided we will not pay a ransom for this event.

Staying with migration, and Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil says the government is already acting on allegations regarding specific people over the exploitation of the visa system.


“We are already taking action on these individuals,” the Labor frontbencher told RN Breakfast.


“But I do think there is a need to have a broader look at the way in which the system has been exploited by criminals, and so we will also undertake that work and we’re just working with the government about what’s the best policy process to work through.”


O’Neil said unions are making an important point about businesses relying on migration rather than just paying people more, adding this is particularly an issue in the care sector.
