RailTel has deployed one of the largest public wifi networks in the country covering 5500+ railway stations, which are managed from a cloud platform. In an interview with ETCIO, CK Prasad, Head-IT & GM, RailTel Corporation, discusses the company’s digitalisation journey and future technology projects.

“We are working on several customer-centric models to enhance RailWire broadband service for retail and MSME market, which are managed from our datacentre. The company is continually experimenting with new technologies to create new revenue streams, business outcome and capabilities to expand the network,” CK Prasad, Head-IT & GM, RailTel Corporation says.

Which new technologies are you implementing in RailTel?

The new technologies implemented in RailTel encompass modernization of datacentre and creating a SDDC infrastructure branded as Rail Cloud Platform. Datacentre modernisation will be followed by deployment of Industrial IoT technology based on Industry 4.0.

Managed services, Web Analytics, Security-as-a-Service, Backup-as-a-Service are some of the other key technology projects in the pipeline.

What differentiation has some of these IT projects created at RailTel?

RailTel has deployed a secure digital workspace solution, based on NIC eOffice application, for Indian Railways on its Rail Cloud Platform to transform workplace and business flow while optimising efficiency and productivity.

Modernisation of datacentre has enabled us to conduct PoC’s at a rapid pace before mass scale production deployment. Recently two PoC’s have been conducted successfully — one for Hospital Information Management System in the South ..
